Is Brazilian biofuels experience a model for other developing countries?
Author: Arnaldo Walter Date: 16/04/2007 Introduction: This paper describes the Brazilian experience with large-scale ethanol production and discusses to what extent it can be a model for other developing countries. Most new producer countries do not have flexible-fuel vehicles. Therefore, ethanol should be introduced through fuel blends, and the ethanol share should be defined as a function of the local production capacity. It is also important to consider that under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), developing countries can sell credits to countries with reduction commitments, Considering a typical Brazilian figure of 2.7 kg of CO2 equivalent avoided emissions per litre of anhydrous ethanol, biofuel use could represent an additional income of 0.02- 0.05 US$/l.
