Is blurry eyesight (myopia) hereditary?
– Disease, including eye disease, can be hereditary. However, myopia is not due to disease and studies of Eskimos have proven that is not hereditary; it is a functional problem. According to Bates teacher Janet Goodrich, PhD, author of Natural Vision Improvement, identical twin studies have proven myopia is not genetic. If the parents have blurry eyesight, it is likely that their children will pick up their poor vision habits. When parents who are wearing glasses want to enroll their children in a vision class, it is suggested that the parents also enroll. Dr Bates found that if the parents and the teachers wore glasses, the child would be more likely to acquire blurred sight.
