Is Blue Cart recycling successful?
Blue Cart recycling has significantly increased the amount of material that is being recycled. In 2010, we recycled approximately 70,000 tonnes of material from blue carts and community recycling depots. That’s a 70 per cent increase in what was recycled before the carts were in place. In the 2010 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, 83 per cent of Calgarians are satisfied with residential Blue Cart recycling. Participation in the program is strong, cart placement is good, and most of the material being placed in the carts is correct and recyclable. The most common non-recyclable items showing up in carts are the following: • Garbage • Styrofoam (TM) • Scrap metal • Electronics • Propane tanks • Helium tanks • Yard waste and food scraps • Plastics with no recycling number • Mixed materials (such as frozen juice containers) To find out how to recycle or dispose of these materials, check out our A to Z guide.
