Is blood in feces common?

You should never have blood in your feces. Initially blood in feces will look like black spots and not red. Therefore it can be confused with some items that you might be eating. If you spot red blood, as in bright red, or dark red, then it could be you have a hemorrhoid. I have to take anti-inflammatory drugs everyday, sometimes have to double the dose, so have to be ‘aware’ of my feces, in case of any GI bleeding. Odd then that while attending ER for another problem they did the finger up the bum and then smear, bit like CSI, just to make sure I was not having a GI Bleed. I told them I was not, they still went ahead and it was negative for blood. So I can but assume, even if you cannot see the black spots, the only way to know for sure, to have this test? I have only seen blood in feces once and that was with my Mother, she kinda insisted, so I would know for future reference. Mother had a Ulcer and to be honest it was black and not red or any hint of red.
