Is Betelgeuse close to becoming a Supernova?

0

It could have already happened! Remember, Betelgeuse is over 500 light years away. At any rate, Betelgeuse is a prime candidate to go supernova. Studies have shown that its luminosity has gone through periods of relatively wild swings over the last several years and since luminosity is a factor of stellar size it follows that Betelgeuse is pulsating just like would be expected prior to a supernova. I just hope I’m around to see it when it happens!
