Is Berkley the missing Freetown-Lakeville school link?
By John Estrella, Standard-Times staff writer BERKLEY — In this small town without a high school, officials are willing to consider a proposal that would link schools to the Freetown-Lakeville district. Still in the abstract, the idea was floated at a meeting last week of Freetown and Lakeville residents and their school officials. An off-again, on-again topic between the towns, Berkley officials are willing to listen this time. In the early 1990s, they were talking to Freetown and Lakeville officials about the same thing. No school officials have discussed the latest merger possibility, however. “We’d always listen,” said Maryann Smith, the Berkley School Committee chairwoman. “We approached them in the past. … They weren’t interested.” Faced with school overcrowding in Lakeville and Berkley, the districts realize they have similar problems but are unsure if joining forces would solve anything. In the past, when towns joined a school district, the state added financial aid for the
