Is belief in God anti-intellectual?

My experience at university was the opposite to that of Professor Chapman, in that through my reading outside of medicine I found that there was satisfying evidence for belief in God and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and that I did not have to “kiss my brains goodbye” to be a Christian. The living Christ and the unseen spiritual world became a joyful, exciting reality which brought added meaning and purpose to my life and the lives of numerous other students. Our faith was and is certainly not “wish fulfilment clasped to the bosoms of mostly aged parishioners” and millions will testify with myself that Christ has brought freedom rather than shackles. That there are “whole tribes to support” Professor Chapman’s position does not of course make it true, since there are just as many tribes who hold to an opposite opinion.
