Not a career unless your ultimate goal is to own or manage an establishment. Otherwise, it is just a job. The hours can be good if you’re a student or bad if you work all night and have class early. It is not something everyone is cut out for. There is a lot of grunt work involved, cleaning, stocking, washing glasses, filling ice etc – movies like “Cocktail” and “Coyote Ugly” make bar tending look like a hoot but it involves a lot more than looking cute and pouring a drink. Depending on the kind of place it is, tips can be good and you are usually expected to split them with other staff like the waitresses or bar back. Most places are fair, some are not. Some bars can get rowdy and if it gets too rowdy – you should be lucky enough to have a bouncer, otherwise things can get ugly. I worked in very classy places to biker bars and they all had their positive and negative sides. I did it for about 6 years and sometimes wish I could go back once in a while.
