Is baptism merely symbolic or does it change a person fundamentally?
Baptism is only symbolic. It symbolises the change in your life and is a public sign of the commitment you have made to God. When you are standing in the water it represents your old life. Going under is the grave. Coming up again represents you resurrection into a new life committed to God and the resurrection you will have after death into eternal life.
