Is assistantship akin to work-study?
It’s similar in some ways, the chief difference being that work-study includes federal funding. On the IU campus, graduate work-study often requires a higher level of work per week. Although there aren’t a lot of graduate work-study allocations, if any, available in the Kelley School of Business, we don’t place any restrictions on students pursuing graduate work-study through another campus employer. That’s fairly rare, however, because [work-study recipients] often have to work 20 hours a week or so, which seems not quite as manageable as the five or twelve hours that go into the assistantships. We do recognize the pressures placed on students in terms of their time and energies, and that’s why we keep the assistantships to a pretty reasonable level of demand. Assistantships can be enriching and also provide a little extra pocket money. But MBA candidates seem most eager to apply for fellowship and scholarships aid.
