Is Asian strain H5N1 avian influenza in North America?
Asian strain H5N1 has not been detected in North America. The virus could enter North America through the illegal or legal wild bird trade, the pet bird trade, the poultry industry, or through international movements of people or migratory birds. If Asian strain H5N1 did become established in North America through the movements of wild birds, the first indication might be die-offs of wild birds or in-contact poultry on the West Pacific or East Atlantic Flyways.
