Is Apple falling into the Complacency Trap ?
1/11/2010 Some of us remember Apple from 13 years ago. Infected by complacency and incompetent management the company almost lost it in the late ’90s. Could it happen again? Example: iPhone. Being a leader in a field is nice and tough to maintain. You have to be running fast to stay ahead of the competition. Two years into the run there’s finally competition – the Droid but more importantly the Nexus One from Google, and for many it looks like they overtook Apple. Here is the big question for Marketeers and Engineers: Is a product release cycle of 12 months too long? Are you a standing target for the other guys during that period? Why is it that a company like HTC can release 6 phones in a year and Apple “does it” only once? Is it complacency (kick marketing) or do companies have to become more nimble and unpredictable [to outsiders] with product releases (kick engineering)?
