Is Apnea related to SIDS?
Using the definition of SIDS above it is difficult to show links between SIDS and apnea. It certainly isn’t the definitive cause of SIDS as it was once thought back in the early 1970’s. It follows that if a child died as a result of Pathological Apnea, (defined as a respiratory pause, which is abnormal and is prolonged for greater than 20 seconds), the instance of the apnea at autopsy may not be found. SIDS is therefore cited as the cause of death.
