If it is an extended outage and the battery is almost out, it will shutdown the computer for you. It also protects against power surges since your computer is actually running on the battery all the time…it just constantly gets recharged. Power coming into your home is what is known as “dirty”. It fluctuates all the time and you might not even notice it. But your electronics sure do! Dirty power can shorten the life of electronics easily. A UPS cleans the power with the battery so it is a constant voltage all the time. Plus, if there was a power outage and you do not have a UPS then the computer has a “hard shutdown” which isn’t good for the computer. You can corrupt a hard drive easily that way.
