Is an MAS 1936 Safe to be Rechambered to 300 WSM?
I have two of these that were rechambered to 300 WSM and a cross-bolt safety added. I’d like to hear opinions of the safety of this conversion. Since the bolt faces are opened up, what options are there to rebarrel if they aren’t safe? The 300 WSM is routinely loaded above 63,000 psi. The action is designed for a cartridge that is loaded in the 40,000+ psi range. Is a 50% increase in routine operating pressure prudent? I don’t think the original designers had that in mind. Yes I’m relatively sure a few proof loads at that pressure would pass…..but a steady diet? Not me. Metal fatigue is cummulative and it certainly would accumulate a lot faster on a diet of 300 WSM. Also the quality of the conversion is imp
