Is an External Load Balancer required when using a webcache cluster? Can Windows Network Load Balancing be used instead?
Yes, an external load balancer is recommended for multiple web cache instances. This provides a single IP address for the browser to connect to. Alternatively, Windows Network Load Balancing mechanism may be used to make multiple windows machine housing Web Cache instances appear as one IP to the browser. However, the scalability of the latter approach is limited, and hence an external load balancer is a better approach.
