Is an Exercise Ball the New Office Chair?
Some personal trainers recommend using an exercise ball in place of an office chair to encourage “active” sitting. The theory is that sitting on the ball encourages you to work your core muscles and discourages poor posture. But an American Council on Exercise study found no difference in the degree of muscle activation or in spine posture. If you enjoy sitting on an exercise ball, limit your sessions to 30 minutes at most to lessen the risk of uncomfortable soft-tissue compression.
