Is all male bonding gay?
It’s not unknown throughout the histories of many different cultures for men to form bonds in this way – a more masculine man (often older and ‘wiser’) with a more feminine man (often younger, sometimes even a teenager). I think it’s often quite positive for men to have relationships like these. I do think that it is sort of a vaguely sexual bond. I don’t think it means either of them are full homosexuals, but it’s my personal belief that many of our bonds are vaguely sexual (even sometimes to our parents, as Freud says). It’s more of a primal sexuality, an Unconscious thing… it’s difficult to pinpoint. So I guess it depends on what you consider to be ‘gay’. Some might see that as gay, but others will not. Human sexuality is far more of a grey area than people would like to believe – it’s not black or white (gay or straight). I think the line, as you say, is really all over the place.
