Is alcohol permitted in low carb eating programs?
Alcohol, in and of itself, does not raise blood sugar. Light consumption of distilled spirits (but not sugary liqueurs), dry wines and low carb beers, is generally permissible during the later phases of most programs. There are, however, a number of caveats that come with use of alcohol. First, and foremost, alcohol presents your body with a fuel that is the most easily used of anything you can ingest. Compared to other substances which require the body to expend some effort to metabolize them into available fuel, alcohol is pretty much “ready to use.” Consequently, you will not be going to the bother of burning any fat while your body as alcohol available. Another consideration is what else might be added in a “mixed drink.” Finally, be aware of the relaxation or loss of judgment associated with alcohol. Many people report that it becomes easier, especially when drinking in a social setting, to stray from one’s usual way of eating.
