General Billy Mitchell stated to Congress in 1935 “I believe that in the future, whoever holds Alaska will hold the world. I think it is the most important strategic place in the world.” Alaska is a very strategic place in the world. With bases in Alaska we are in range of many of our “U.S.” threats. Believe it or not in World War 2, there were many battles fought in Alaska verse the Japanese. There were 3,929 U.S. casualties: 580 were killed, 1,148 were injured, 1,200 had severe cold injuries, 614 succumbed to disease, and 318 died of miscellaneous causes, largely Japanese booby traps and friendly fire.
