Type AB blood is not the same as type A-. The four most common blood types are A, B, AB and O. This is commonly called the ABO blood group. Type AB has the antigens found in BOTH types A and B, but neither of the antibodies found in those types, while type O has both antibodies, but neither of the antigents. Thus, people with Type AB blood can accept blood from the other types (so long as the Rh factor matches i.e. a person with AB negative blood cannot receive blood from a type A positive donor), while people with type O can only receive donations from type O donors.
