Yanmar, founded in 1912, was the forerunner in the compact diesel engine market. Designing their first diesel engine in 1930 and built the worlds first small horizontal diesel engine in 1933. The Japanese pioneered the 4WD system for small tractors, well before the American manufacturers. 1974, Kubota introduced a 12 HP four-wheel drive tractor in the US. Prior to that point, US manufacturers did not use four-wheel drive except in the largest models. By 1986 Yanmar had shipped over 100,000 tractors to John Deere alone.
