Hi, I am currently using a Thinkpad T61 Laptop. So far, it has not given me any problem and has served me well for the past 2 years. I have used mine for internet, word process, some photo editing and very little games. I understand that, they have different configurations for different Thinkpad models.I believe all models would mean most of your requirements. The only issue would be the gaming part. I suggest that you check with the university on the Model number and configuration. High chance that it would be a better version than your Dell Inspiron.
