Is a synthesizer playable like a normal keyboard? Can it mimic other instruments?
A synthesizer can be defined in a basic manner as an electronic instrument that manipulates/generates and combines frequencies to create electrical signals which can be heard via an amplifier or speakers. Many are programmable and allow the user to edit and change various parameters such as waveforms, modulation, and tune to name only a few. The majority of synthesizers are able to mimic instruments like pianos, violins, etc. Digital synthesizers are much better at creating these types of sounds than analog ones. Generally speaking, the newer/more advanced the digital synthesizer (excluding analog modeling synths) the more “realistic” the sound can get. Keyboards, on the other hand, do not allow for the user to manipulate sounds sometimes called “tone colors” or “patches.” You can call a synth a keyboard if it has keys, but a keyboard and a synthesizer are completely different things. There are synthesizers that have no keys at all (rackmount, modular; software) and cannot be called ke
