Is a soffit vent required for each rafter?

0

Tom writes from Grosse Pointe, Michigan: “We’re getting new shingles on our roof (Duration Premium) and adding soffit and additional exhaust vents. We have no soffit vents now and less than optimal exhaust vents, i.e. two 8” diameter can vents when 169 sq. inches is called for based on a 1:300 ratio. Our roof design is “cathedral”-like around the outside 3′ of our house, so baffles will be required between each rafter. Is a soffit vent also required for EACH rafter, or will equally spaced soffit vents to achieve 169 sq. inches of intake area be OK – EVEN IF NOT EVERY RAFTER HAS A SOFFIT VENT INTAKE?” Answer: Fully vented soffits are typically not required but I suggest checking your local building code to confirm that.
