Is a scholarship to help a student studying for a Doctorate or Masters degree an eligible scholarship?
No. A scholarship to help a student studying for a Doctorate or for a Masters degree is not an eligible scholarship. The types of tertiary courses that a scholarship fund can provide money for are the tertiary courses set out in the Determination of Education Institutions and Courses under Subsections 3(1) and 5D(1) of the Student Assistance Act 1973 Determination No. 2002/1 and any other course that the Education Minister has determined is a tertiary course for the purposes of the GST Act. Masters and Doctoral courses are not listed in Determination 2002/1 or another relevant determination as a tertiary course. Please note that Master’s qualifying courses and integrated undergraduate/postgraduate courses leading to a Masters degree (excluding the year or years relating to study at the Masters level) are listed in Determination 2002/1 as tertiary courses.
