A professional license isn’t REQUIRED for design or consulting. However, for liability concerns, a lot of contractors and manufacturers won’t accept design plans or patent drawings without a PE stamp of certification on it. Many of your clients would likely pay a larger fee knowing that a licensed professional is performing the work (someone who is familiar with industry codes and standards and has the certification to prove it). You won’t be able to get the work experience required to obtain a professional license unless you work for a number of years under the supervision of another PE. I have no idea where you live, but I’d suggest moving to a location where you can get that experience, probably to a larger urban area.
