Is a passport required to re-enter the US after a day trip to a Mexican border town?”

I live in California and for years we have taken day trips or weekend trips into Mexico. We never used to need more than a driver’s license but now we need a passport. I was there a couple of weeks ago and had to use my passport. The funny thing to me was that no one stopped me going into Mexico, it was coming back into the US that took hours and where they checked ID’s. We just drove into Mexico and went on our way.
