No, you do not need a passport to cross over the border and visit the border town, nor will you need a tourist visa for a short trip, however if you are unlucky you may have a few problems coming back. If you can provide proof of citizenship, ie Photos ID cards, Birth certificate Social security number etc you will eventually be allowed back to your country with a stern warning that you will face a fine of $500.00 for the next violation. U.S. DHS law now requires a passport for all adult citizens entering the U.S.A from all points of entry.
