Is a passed ball considered an error if a runner advances and/or scores?
Answer Scott, An error can only be charged after the ball is put in play after the pitch. There is never an error charged to the catcher while receiving a pitch. Miscues on the pitch are either charged to the catcher as a passed ball or on the pitcher with a wild pitch. One note for the catcher, it is only considered a passed ball if the catcher could have caught the ball with ordinary effort. All other pitches that get by the catcher that allow a runner to advance are wild pitches. It is always a wild pitch if the ball hits the ground prior to getting the catcher if the catcher can’t stop it and a runner advances.
