Is a Masters degree required to practice in the field of dietetics?
A Masters degee is not required to practice as an RD. Approximately 50% of RDs hold Masters degrees and this number is higher in certain areas of the county such as Washington, DC, and New York, NY. RDs hold Masters degrees in a variety of different disciplines including nutritional science, public health, health education, exercise physiology, business, and psychology. Although a Masters degree is not currently required by the ADA, one may be preferred or required for certain positions. RDs with Masters degrees may be more competitive for jobs and may earn higher salaries.
