I live in an area where in the spring tornadoes are almost a daily occurrence. Hardly anyone I know has a basement, some do have an underground tornado shelter but a lot of people don’t. The weather radar is sophisticated enough now that you usually have at least a few minutes warning before a tornado hits, unless it just forms right on top of you. If you have time you can get in your car and out run it, just make sure you drive away from the storm at a right angle. If you don’t have time you get in the bathtub and cover yourself up with a mattress if possible, if not a lot of blankets. Basements really only provide a minimum amount of protection from a tornado. If a big one comes and destroys the house, the house could collapse on top of you, or if the house is totally gone you could be sucked up right of the basement. If I lived in Michigan I wouldn’t buy a house with a basement for tornado safety, but if you want the basement for storage or whatever that is fine.
