Is a guy in the navy allowed to date a girl under 18?
Sergeant is actually quite wrong in this case. Regardless of the fact that he claims to be a SSG, he clearly has no background knowledge in this situation. 1) By the UCMJ, the age of consent is 16 years old, UNLESS state or local laws have it as higher like 18 in most states.. But the minimum by military law is 16. When I was an MP I had to actually deal with two separate cases of this. I had to arrest them and then testify in their cases. 2) IF your local law says 18, then yes if he is caught sleeping with her he could be punished. As she is 17 and fairly close to his age, the most he would LIKELY see is non-judicial punishment and loss of rank. But that will depend on the leniency of his command.
