Is a drive shaft exspensive to replace?

It is the oil seal that need replacing, not the actual driveshaft (if it was a broken driveshaft, you wouldn’t be able to drive the car!). Your other confusion is ‘gearbox oil seal’, or ‘driveshaft oil seal’ – actually it is the same thing; it the oil seal around the driveshaft (going to turn the front wheel) out from the gearbox, so it could be called either. I would estimate (but please note this is an ESTIMATE) that 2 hours labour max at £60 – £65 per hour, plus about £20 or less for the oil seal, plus VAT gives you some idea of the likely cost.
