Is a drainable fecal collector a better alternative than a rectal tube?
Definitely. Rectal tubes often leak, and therefore cannot control odor or protect the patient’s skin. Also, rectal tubes are contraindicated in some patients; for instance, patients with bleeding disorders, those who are immunocompromised, and those with rectal pathology. In addition, a rectal tube usually needs to be removed frequently to avoid the risk of damaging the sphincter and rectal mucosa.
