We were disturbed to hear in our consultation that there are growing preoccupations in health care facilities about the lack of interest in training for nursing and medical specialties focused on seniors. We already face a severe shortage of providers of primary care, especially family doctors, whose involvement in the care of seniors is critically important (this may be exacerbated by the ongoing effects of the downsizing of staff that occurred during the repeated restructuring of Quebecs hospital network in the 1990s). There are indications that fewer and fewer physicians in training are opting for family medicine practices that will provide these services.
