Answer Mia – First of all, let me say that craniofacial surgery is minimally related to orthognathic surgery. Although both surgeries are concerned with the head and face, the craniofacial surgeon’s main focus is the relationship of the skull and forehead to the rest of the face. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon’s focus is on the portion of the face from the eyes through to the lower jaw. It is true that there is some intermixing in treatments, but orthognathic surgery is concerned with treatment to the upper and lower jaw and establishing a bony relationship that is not only cosmetically pleasing, but allows for the optimal functioning of the jaws and the teeth. The craniofacial surgeon has no training whatsoever in dental relationships and therefore even when attempting a cosmetic change to the bones is possible by them, they are not trained in the appropriate relationship of one jaw to the other to allow the best functioning of the teeth that are included in the surgically treated
