Is a Convertible Car Seat Safe for an Infant?

My husband and I want to go with a convertible car seat. We don’t need the infant seat and stroller but I am worried that the convertible seat won’t be as safe for a newborn. We literally will be driving the baby home from the hospital in this seat. Did anyone use a convertible car seat from the being and how did it work with a baby that small. I know that they say they are for 5lbs and up but they just look so big. Thanks!
