Is a constant sore throat and dry mouth normal in pregnancy?
A. During pregnancy your immune system is slightly weaker than when youre not pregnant, and this seems to lead to viral infections being more common. Sore throat, dry mouth and enlarged lymph gland are common symptoms of such infections. However, its unusual for symptoms such as the ones you describe to continue unchanged for 10 weeks. If your GP is aware of this fact and has examined you, its likely that he or she feels that the symptoms and the swollen glands are not severe enough to be of any serious concern. However, if you feel that this is not the case, and these symptoms are bothering you to any great extent, it might be appropriate to request a referral to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. They would be able to examine you and reassure you that there is no serious cause for your symptoms, and possibly to suggest a strategy for dealing with this problem. Changes in taste and smell, and a metallic taste in the mouth are frequent complaints in pregnancy, but a dry mouth isnt.
