Is a car is a great place to avoid lightning?
Mom always said the safest place to be during a thunderstorm is in a car. But, all cars are not created equal. A car with a metal roof is a good place to wait out a storm. The metal top will help conduct the current around the outside of the car and into the ground, keeping your team safer. But, a rag top convertible is a risky place during a storm. There is no safety in numbers. No matter how cautious you are, your team can still get caught out in the open during a thunderstorm. When that happens, do not let everyone huddle together. Make sure they spread at least several yards a part. Have them crouch down, balancing on the balls of their feet. Keep everyone clear of metal fences, avoid standing in puddles and make sure no one is still holding a metal bat. Somebody got stuck!
