Is a campfire permit required?
No. The national forest does not require a permit for a campfire. In Shenandoah National Park campfires are not permitted in the backcountry except at pre-constructed fireplaces at backcountry huts and day use shelters. While on national forest property, the State law on open fires must be obeyed. Virginia law prohibits fires before 4:00 p.m. and after Midnight from February 15 to April 30th. All fires must be out by midnight during this period. West Virginia law prohibits fires between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from March 1 to May 31 and from October 1 to December 31. Do not build a fire on a windy day and to NEVER leave a fire unattended. Minimize Campfire Impacts Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the backcountry. Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light. Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. Keep fires small.
