Is 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight optimal?

That amount generally is fine for most people, however, blanket recommendations for protein based on bodyweight or calories can be inaccurate if bodyweight is skewed (high body fat) and/or calorie intake is skewed (very low calorie intake, excessive calorie intake). It may be more helpful to set a per feeding protein goal (in grams). Or better yet, if you focus on consuming some form of protein at each of your regular feedings, protein intake should be adequate. See All About Protein for more information on variations in protein needs.
