The installer should be fine, but there is a known incompability with older Java versions and compositing window managers like Compiz or Beryl. The issue is tracked by the following bug id http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6429775 which provides insight and workarounds. The best strategy to prevent the issue is to either disable the compositing manager altoghether, or update to a more recent VM.
