Internally and externally threaded barbells? Whats the difference and why does that matter?

Externally threaded barbells are the much cheaper of the two to produce. The main problem with externally threaded barbells, and the reason we do not use them in our studio, is that the threads must be forced through a fresh (or healed, for that matter) piercing. These external threads can irritate or tear the piercing. Whatever the case, the threads being raked through sensitive skin is not something we are interested in putting our customers through. As for internally threaded barbells, not only are there no threads going through flesh at all, but also the balls on each end screw down more tightly, making the ball less likely to unscrew itself and come loose. All in all, there is no reason whatsoever to use an externally threaded barbell on a client (unless that barbell is 18ga, as it is not currently possible to make an 18ga internally threaded barbell).
