Answer Laurie To the best of my knowledge, when an unmarried parent dies, in all 50 states the funeral home would look to the surviving children to pay for the costs of disposition. If the deceased died with insufficient funds and/or an estate and the children are unable to pay for any disposition of the body, some States and/or Counties have funds available to pay for very limited types of disposition (Usually direct cremation). Donation of the body to a Medical School may be an option for you (The body is used as a cadaver for dissection by students). But I must caution you to only deal with University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison (608-262-2888) or Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukie (414-257-8261), as these are legitimate places in Wisconsin to donate the body to (There are some grey market companies who will take the body and sell the body parts to researchers and when they have “Harvested” all the parts possible, they will send you the cremated remains of what they
