Answer Laurie To the best of my knowledge, when an unmarried parent dies, in all 50 states the funeral home would look to the surviving children to pay for the costs of disposition. If the deceased died with insufficient funds and/or an estate and the children are unable to pay for any disposition of the body, some States and/or Counties have funds available to pay for very limited types of disposition (Usually direct cremation). Donation of the body to a Medical School may be an option for you (The body is used as a cadaver for dissection by students).
