It was “in Harm’s Way” an archetypical 50’s movie. John Wayne was still making 10 year old morality plays in 1965. This one was kind of schizo though. Wayne’s character was Rockwell Torrey (now that’s a man’s name!) and his wife left him because she couldn’t stand the rigors of being a Navy wife and took his infant son with her. The wife who abandons her hero husband to go back to an uptight, rich Boston family (the uptight rich family stereotype appears in at least 3 Wayne movies.) Anyway that’s how Wayne gets to be straight and not stigmatized by divorce. Pearl Harbor throws a kink in Rockwell’s career but he takes his demotion like man. By the way his best friend is a hard drinking, womanizing Kirk Douglas. As soon as the Japanese fly away Rock’s stiff necked long lost son shows up and gives Dad the cold shoulder. The Duke takes it like a man. Sonny works for an officer who aspires to make a political career after the war so he must be evil. Rock meets a great dame, nurse Patricia N
