IN THE SPIRITUAL WARFARE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHAT IS “HUNGER”?
In the same way that a contemplation of spiritual warfare, as opposed to secular warfare, puts a different definition on the word “enemy,” so it also puts a different definition on the word “hunger.” Whereas in secular warfare an enemy’s body may literally hunger for food, in spiritual warfare the enemy’s soul hungers for spiritual sustenance. Spiritual sustenance is what Christ spoke of when He said in His Sermon on the Mount, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,. for they shall be satisfied (Matthew 5:6). He spoke of spiritual sustenance when He discoursed with Simon Peter and told him to Feed My lambs, and Feed My sheep (John 21:15,17). Christ spoke of spiritual sustenance when He commissioned Christians to Go into all the world and preach the gospel, to all creation (Mark 16:15). Spiritual warfare is based on the implication that everyone needs, or has a hunger for, the gospel of Christ. If the non-Christian enemy does not acknowledge his hunger for spiritual
