In the Presence of Ulcerated Plaques in the Aortic Arch, What Is the Risk of Stroke?
The pathogenesis of brain infarction remains obscure in up to 40% of patients. A few years ago, Amarenco et al. [1992] reported a landmark study based on an autopsy data bank. Among 500 consecutive patients with cerebrovascular disease and other neurologic disorders who were studied at autopsy, ulcerated plaques were present in the aortic arch in 26% of the 239 patients with cerebrovascular disease but in only 5% of the 261 patients with other neurologic disorders. The difference between the two groups was statistically highly significant (p Reference Amarenco P, Duyckaerts C, Tzourio C, Hcnin D. Bousser MG.
