In the past, I’ve been told coliform mastitis is not treatable. Why has this changed?

Historically, coliforms caused severe mastitis resulting in extremely sick cows that required extensive systemic therapy to keep them alive. Today, many of these E. coli mastitis cases appear as common clinical mastitis and are not life-threatening. In addition, recent research has indicated that E. coli infected quarters can become chronically infected. As a result routine treatment of the coliform cases will help these cows cure both clinically and bacteriologically. In clinical studies, cases of clinical mastitis caused by E. coli were evaluated and effectively treated with SPECTRAMAST® LC. It is best to identify the mastitis pathogens being treated and obtain susceptibility data so that viable treatment protocols can be established.
