• Places, the things that nobody else wants such as chemical factories with pollution. How does it happen that poor people are concentrated in these areas? Because the cost of living is cheap, poor people could afford to live there. Nimby = not in my backyard People don’t want the low-income housing and chemical industry in their neighborhood. People who want to save the old-growth do not reply on cutting trees for living. On the other hand, some people might depend on extraction of resources for living. That is the argument. Comparing with the third world countries, wealthier countries are better than poor countries in protecting their environment because they can afford it. Hierarchy of needs (from the fundamental to the higher level): • Food, shelter, etc. In poor countries, people tend to focus on their food. Saving rainforest is not their first concern.
